What it does

Vitamin E (tocopherol) is a fat-soluble antioxidant found naturally in the skin's sebum. It protects cell membranes from oxidative damage caused by UV radiation and environmental pollutants. In skincare, it works synergistically with vitamin C — each regenerates the other — making the combination far more effective than either alone. It also has emollient properties that soften and condition skin.

Benefits
  • Neutralises free radicals from UV and environmental pollution
  • Works synergistically with Vitamin C to multiply antioxidant protection
  • Softens and conditions the skin barrier
  • Supports wound healing and scar reduction
  • Stabilises Vitamin C formulations

Heads up
  • Tocopheryl acetate (the ester form) may not convert effectively in all skin types
  • Pure tocopherol can feel heavy and is moderately comedogenic in high amounts
  • May cause breakouts for acne-prone skin in oil-based formulations
How to use

Often included automatically in serums and moisturisers. If using a standalone oil, apply a few drops to damp skin or mix into your moisturiser. Morning use is most beneficial for antioxidant protection.

Typical concentration: 0.5–5%
