What it does

Petrolatum is a semi-solid mixture of hydrocarbons refined from petroleum. It is one of the most effective occlusives in skincare, forming a near-impermeable barrier that prevents transepidermal water loss. Contrary to popular belief, properly refined cosmetic-grade petrolatum is non-comedogenic and non-irritating.

Benefits
  • Extremely effective at preventing moisture loss (TEWL)
  • Accelerates wound healing and skin barrier recovery
  • Soothes and protects cracked, chapped, or irritated skin
  • Non-allergenic and non-sensitising for most people

Heads up
  • Heavy texture — not ideal as an everyday facial moisturiser for oily skin
  • Can feel greasy; best used as a final seal at night
How to use

Apply as the final step in your nighttime routine to seal in all previous layers. Best used on slightly damp skin. A thin layer is enough.

Typical concentration: Used as needed; often 30–99% in ointments
