What it does

Octocrylene is a chemical UV filter that absorbs UVB and short-wave UVA radiation. Importantly, it also acts as a photostabiliser for avobenzone, preventing its degradation in sunlight. It contributes to water resistance in sunscreens and has a good safety profile at cosmetic concentrations.

Benefits
  • UVB and short UVA protection
  • Stabilises avobenzone — extends its protective lifespan
  • Contributes to water resistance

Heads up
  • Some studies suggest potential endocrine disruption at high systemic levels — well below cosmetic use
  • Can trigger contact allergy in rare cases
  • Concerns about reef toxicity (some jurisdictions restrict it)
How to use

Apply sunscreen 15–20 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply every 2 hours outdoors.

Typical concentration: ≤10% in EU formulations
