What it does

Avobenzone is an oil-soluble chemical UV filter that absorbs the full spectrum of UVA radiation (320–400nm). It is the only FDA-approved chemical filter that covers the full UVA range and is found in the vast majority of chemical sunscreens. It is inherently unstable and must be paired with stabilisers like octocrylene or Tinosorb.

Benefits
  • Broad UVA coverage — the widest of any chemical filter
  • FDA-approved and widely available
  • Effective at low concentrations

  • Photounstable — degrades in UV light without a stabiliser
  • Some studies suggest low-level skin penetration
  • Can cause contact allergy in rare cases
How to use

Apply sunscreen generously (1/4 teaspoon for the face) 15–20 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply every 2 hours.

Typical concentration: 1–3% in sunscreen formulations (EU/UK limit)
