What it does

Octinoxate is the most commonly used chemical UVB filter worldwide. It absorbs UVB radiation efficiently and is well-tolerated in most sunscreen formulations. Like oxybenzone, it has raised concerns about systemic absorption and potential endocrine effects at high doses, though regulatory bodies have maintained approval at approved concentrations.

Benefits
  • Highly effective UVB protection
  • Well-tolerated with a light skin feel
  • Widely available globally

  • Photounstable — degrades in UV light over time
  • Potential endocrine effects at systemic levels (above cosmetic use)
  • Reef-toxic — restricted in Hawaii and similar jurisdictions
How to use

Apply sunscreen generously 15–20 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply every 2 hours.
