Can I use vitamin C and retinol together?

Not in the same application — they're both potent actives that can destabilize each other and irritate skin, but they work fine on a split schedule.

Vitamin C works best at a low pH and is typically most effective in the morning (it also pairs well with sunscreen). Retinol is most effective at night and can increase sun sensitivity. Layering them in the same routine can reduce both their effectiveness and increase irritation risk. The straightforward fix most dermatologists recommend: vitamin C in the morning, retinol at night — same routine, different halves of the day.

Likely cause

Not a cause so much as a common mismatch — most people ask this because they've read conflicting advice about whether these two are compatible at all.
