How long does it actually take for skincare to work?

Most active ingredients need 4-8 consistent weeks before you'll see a real difference — skin cell turnover itself takes about a month.

A full skin cell cycle — from new cell formation to reaching the surface — takes roughly 28 days in younger skin and longer as skin ages. That's the floor for seeing change from most actives (retinol, vitamin C, exfoliating acids); many people stop a product at week 2 assuming it 'isn't working' when it hasn't had time to. The exception is anything addressing an active reaction (like a barrier-repair moisturiser calming stinging), which can show improvement within days.

Likely cause

Not a cause — this is a timeline-expectations question, most often asked after a first product hasn't shown visible change yet.
